Class Breakdown

Tracheostomy Fundamentals is a comprehensive, hands-on course designed to build confidence and competence in routine tracheostomy care for medically complex individuals across the lifespan. This class blends essential clinical knowledge with immersive simulation to support safe, effective, and consistent caregiving practices. Participants will review airway and respiratory anatomy, relevant pathophysiology, and common conditions that require a tracheostomy. The course covers tracheostomy tube types, indications, and key considerations for airway health, patency, and humidification. Emphasis is placed on recognizing normal versus concerning findings and understanding how to respond appropriately. Through guided instruction and simulation-based practice, participants will develop skills in safe suctioning, routine tracheostomy and stoma care, tube positioning and securement, and tube changes within defined safety parameters. Common tracheostomy-related complications are reviewed, along with early warning signs and escalation considerations. This course also addresses developmental and family-centered care, including differences across pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations, as well as environmental safety and infection prevention in the care setting. The class culminates in a full simulation immersion, allowing participants to practice and demonstrate routine tracheostomy care skills in realistic scenarios. This supportive, skills-focused environment is designed to reinforce learning, build confidence, and promote safe caregiving routines. This course is ideal for caregivers, family members, and professionals seeking foundational tracheostomy knowledge and hands-on practice in a simulation lab setting.
